How Long Will Lip Augmentation Treatment Take?
The duration of lip augmentation surgery can vary depending on the type of lip augmentation being performed. Lip injections with dermal fillers are the quickest treatment, taking less than 30 minutes to administer in-office. Laser rejuvenation can take a little longer, up to one hour in some cases. Lip augmentation surgery to insert lip implants will be the longest procedure, taking up to 2 hours. This is performed in a surgical setting with the aid of local/twilight anesthesia.
How Long Will Lip Augmentation Recovery Take?
The duration of lip augmentation recovery will vary depending on the type of lip augmentation performed. Lip injections require no downtime or recovery period, although you may experience minor bruising or swelling for a few days. Laser rejuvenation may require a few days of sun protection, as the skin will be highly sensitive following laser resurfacing treatments. The skin may also be reddened and irritated, so many patients choose to take a few days off of social activities. Lip augmentation with lip implants will require approximately 1-2 weeks of downtime. While many patients can begin returning to normal activities within a few days, there will be some restrictions on physical activity and certain dietary items.

Are there any risks or complications associated with lip augmentation surgery?
Like any surgical procedure, there are risks and potential complications associated with lip augmentation surgery. These may include bleeding, infection and nerve damage. However, these complications occur in less than 1% of lip augmentation procedures. Furthermore, Dr. Garcia’s focus and expertise on lip augmentation techniques help to minimize the risks associated with lip augmentation surgery.
What is used for lip injections?
At Garcia Facial Plastic Surgery, we use a specific collection of dermal filler products for lip augmentations. We exclusively use Juvederm® products for lip injections due to their superior results and duration. The Juvederm® products we may recommend for lip injections include:
- Juvederm® Volbella
- Juvederm Volbella® is a hyaluronic acid (HA) filler specifically formulated for subtle lip enhancement and the treatment of fine lines around the mouth. It is recommended for patients who desire a subtle and natural-looking enhancement of their lips.
- Juvederm® Ultra XC
- Juvederm® Ultra XC is also an HA filler, but it is formulated for moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds and is generally used for more significant lip augmentation. It is recommended for moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, and it provides more volume due to its thicker consistency. It can also be used for lip augmentation in patients who desire more significant volume enhancement.
- Juvederm® Volbella
Will there be scarring after lip augmentation?
There are incisions involved in lip augmentation when we insert implants into the lips. However, these incisions are made inside the mouth, where any scarring will not be visible to others. Lip augmentation with injections and laser resurfacing produce no scarring.
Can lip implants be removed?
Yes, the Permalip™ lip implants can be removed if desired. Lip implant removal is a surgical procedure. Patients may want to remove their lip implants after experiencing dissatisfaction with the results, changes in personal preferences, or the presence of complications. In most cases, lip implants can be removed using the original incision, eliminating any additional scarring inside the mouth. However, even when the original incisions aren’t used, new incisions are typically placed inside the mouth so there is no visible scarring. Keep in mind that the extent of surgery involved in lip implant removal can vary depending on the type of implants you have and how long you’ve had them. After lip implant removal, recovery is similar to the original lip implant procedure.
