What is Fat Grafting?
Fat grafting, also known as fat transfer or fat injection, is a procedure in which a person’s own body fat is harvested from one area of the body (typically the thighs, abdomen, or hips) using liposuction, and then injected into another area of the body where more volume or contour is desired (typically the breasts, buttocks, face or hands). Fat grafting is unique because it can simultaneously sculpt multiple areas of the body by slimming areas where liposuction is performed, then enhancing volume in areas where the fat is injected.
“The results to me were phenomenal. I would look at myself going, ‘Is this really me?!’, and I loved it!” – Alva
Alva received Fat Grafting in addition to Facelift, Neck Lift, Lower Eyelid Surgery, Brow Lift, and a Chemical Peel.
How is Fat Grafting Performed?
At Garcia Facial Plastic Surgery, fat grafting can be performed with a variety of anesthetic techniques depending on the treatment areas. During your consultation, we’ll explain your treatment options and help you identify the best anesthetic option for a safe and comfortable surgery. Then, fat grafting involves a three-step process:
1Harvesting Fat
The first step is harvesting fat from a donor site. This is done using standard liposuction techniques. The most
common donor sites include:
- Thighs
- Abdomen
- Hips
2Processing Fat
Before the harvested fat can be injected into the body, it needs to be purified to separate the fat cells from other ingredients. This is done by placing the fat into a machine that separates and processes the fat for injection.
3Injecting Fat
Finally, the fat is ready for injection into the body. Using a needle, similar to injectable treatments, we’ll inject the fat into the desired treatment areas. We may perform multiple injections into multiple areas to produce the desired results in the treatment area.

Frequently Asked Fat Grafting Questions
How much does fat grafting cost In Jacksonville?
The average cost of fat grafting varies from one community to the other with some small variations. Factors such as the facility where the fat grafting will be performed and the type of anesthesia used will influence the final cost of the surgery. Jacksonville fat grafting surgery varies in price range according to these factors. Garcia Facial Plastic Surgery makes facial surgery procedures available and affordable for everyone. Our office provides a wide array of payment options, including easy financing. We also accept cash, major credit cards and personal checks for fat grafting and other procedures.
What is the difference between fat grafting and liposuction?
Fat grafting and liposuction are different procedures involving fat cells. Liposuction removes excess fat for body contouring, but does nothing more after that. Fat grafting is similar because it begins with liposuction techniques to harvest fat. However, the difference is that fat grafting then transfers that harvested fat to other areas of the body to restore volume or enhance contours. Liposuction is best suited for patients who only want to remove fat from the body, while fat grafting is better suited for patients who want to remove excess fat from the body while also augmenting other areas of the body with natural volume.
Does fat grafting look natural?
Yes, fat grafting can result in a natural-looking appearance because it uses the patient’s own fat. This makes the results look and feel natural, especially compared to dermal fillers and implants. Dr. Garcia is highly skilled in fat grafting techniques, and takes the time to ensure that your fat injections blend seamlessly with your existing features. However, it’s worth noting that the final results of fat grafting may take some time to fully settle, as the transplanted fat cells need time to establish a blood supply and integrate with the surrounding tissues.
Can fat grafting be combined with other cosmetic procedures?
Yes, fat grafting can be combined with other cosmetic procedures to achieve more comprehensive benefits. Some common procedures that are often combined with fat grafting include:
- Facelift – Fat grafting can be used in conjunction with a facelift to add volume to areas that have lost fullness due to aging, such as the cheeks, temples, and midface. This complements the lifting and tightening effects of a facelift.
- Neck lift – Fat grafting can be used to restore lost volume and contour to the neck area during a neck lift procedure. This helps to create a smoother, more youthful appearance in the neck and jawline, enhancing the results of a neck lift.
- Eyelid surgery – Fat grafting can be used during eyelid surgery to address hollowness or depressions in the tear trough area or the upper eyelids. This creates a smoother, more youthful appearance around the eyes, enhancing the results of eyelid surgery.
- Dermal fillers and injectables – Fat grafting can be used in combination with dermal fillers and injectables to provide a more comprehensive and natural-looking enhancement. While dermal fillers are typically used for smaller, more localized areas, fat grafting can be used for larger areas that require more volume restoration.
