What Is Skin Resurfacing?
Skin resurfacing is a procedure that recontours the outer (epidermis) and inner (dermis) layers of the skin. Facial resurfacing has been likened more to an art than a science, requiring a profound understanding of the anatomy and the physiology of the skin. After all, the skin is your body’s largest organ and sheds and regenerates itself almost daily. Skin resurfacing recontours the outer and inner layers of the skin.

Why Does My Skin Age?
As we age, we lose elasticity in the deeper layers of our skin. Collagen, which serves as a support scaffold for the dermis, begins to fray and loosens its attachments to nearby collagen fibrils and dries up. This causes the skin to become loose and less elastic, allowing wrinkles to form. Any facial resurfacing procedure, whether it be mechanical (microdermabrasion) or chemical (peels) will help tighten that collagen layer, returning strength and shape to the skin.
Are Chemical Peels Only For The Face?
Your face isn’t the only body part that can benefit from chemical peels. Jacksonville-based Garcia Facial Plastic Surgery offers chemical peels for the hands, chest – a popular remedy for those brown spots caused by sun exposure or aging. The peel is easily administered, and you’ll see results within two weeks. With two to three treatments, you can expect near elimination of brown spots, though we highly recommend you wear sunscreen after your treatments to keep spots from reemerging.

How Do Chemical Peels Differ?
Light Chemical Peels
Also called a superficial chemical peel, a light peel is an accelerated form of exfoliation using a chemical element that penetrates into the outermost layer of the skin and gives it a youthful glow. The peel destroys damaged layers on the skin’s surface and stimulates both the growth of new epidermal skin cells and the production of collagen, allowing for tighter, brighter skin. As an antioxidant, a light peel may also reduce acne breakouts and acne scarring.
Patients who use Retin-A or Accutane must stop using these products at least three days prior to undergoing a light chemical peel. Jacksonville’s Garcia Facial Plastic Surgery requires this because these products thin the skin and can cause the chemical agent to seep too deeply into the skin. Typically patients can resume Retin-A or Accutane use three days after a light facial peel. Light peels yield the best results when done as a series of three or more treatments, and there’s no downtime for healing.
Medium Chemical Peels
Medium chemical peels in Jacksonville are a hot commodity. Florida’s sunny climate lends a propensity to develop freckles or sun spots, thanks to super-charged, sun-driven melanin production. When a medium peel is applied to the skin, the peel agent penetrates into the upper part of the dermis, eliminating sunspots, as well as the brown discoloration known as age or liver spots. A medium peel also tightens collagen, helping to smooth fine lines and improve mottled skin.
On the day of your medium chemical peel, our aesthetician will cleanse your face to wash away any impurities from the skin, then apply a peeling agent. You may experience a slight tingling or burning sensation, but a fan blowing cool fresh air is kept nearby throughout the procedure. You’ll go home the same day with detailed instructions for caring for the peeled area. Within three days, your skin will begin to peel and by day seven, 90 percent of the face is healed, revealing smooth new baby skin. Expect to have follow up appointments at week 1 and week 2 to monitor progress.
Deep Chemical Peels
Deep chemical peels penetrate into the deepest part of the dermis to rearrange collagen, melanocytes and other support structures of the skin. Because they’re the most intense of the three facial peel levels, deep peels require a keen eye, skilled hand and remarkable attention to detail. You will likely experience swelling, a normal response to injury. You can also expect the thinner skin around your eyes and lips to remain swollen for up to seven days after treatment.
The most critical factor in a deep chemical peel is the patient’s strict adherence to post-procedure instructions. Your skin may remain pink in color for two to three weeks, during which time you will need to be vigilant about skincare. We strongly recommend you remain near Jacksonville for the first few weeks following your deep chemical peel and allow for multiple follow up appointments to ensure that your skin is healing beautifully.
Have you heard these Myths about Chemical Peels?
As with all facial treatments, there are myths and misconceptions behind results and side effects of facial peels. Jacksonville’s top skincare specialist can help set the record straight.
Myth 1: I will not be able to get any sun after my peel.
UNTRUE! Thankfully for those who live and play in Jacksonville, facial peels do not mean you have to give up days in the sunshine. Depending on the depth of your facial peel, you will need to avoid the sun for a period of time immediately after your peel. Once you’ve regenerated your new layer of skin, you can re-expose your skin to the sun. However, keep in mind that unprotected sun exposure can be what caused your skin to show premature signs of aging in the first place. Prolong the effect of your chemical peel and help protect yourself from developing skin cancer by applying a minimum SPF-30 sunblock any time you go outside. It’s a lifestyle change that will prolong your beautiful results and protect your health.
Myth 2: I will have permanent color changes like white spots or dark spots.
UNTRUE! Light discoloration caused by a chemical peel is a very rare complication usually caused by applying the peeling agent too deeply. It’s never been seen here at Garcia Facial Plastic Surgery in Jacksonville. Chemical peels more commonly (though still rare) may cause darker spots, particularly in darker skinned patients. This over-activity of melanin is temporary and typically caused by the peeling agent being applied too shallowly. These discolorations can be remedied with a corrective lightening cream.
Myth 3: My skin will look “raw” from the peel.
UNTRUE! Despite character Samantha Jones’s jarring appearance in that episode of Sex and the City, your skin will never be left looking raw after an expertly performed chemical peel. Jacksonville patients do have a pink tint to their skin following a facial peel (for 24 hours with a light peel, five to seven days with a medium peel and 10 to 14 days with a deep peel). Many light chemical peels are lunchtime procedures and most patients opting for a medium peel return to work and regular routines the next day.
