Real Patient Journeys

How long will rhinoplasty surgery take?

Rhinoplasty typically takes from 1.5 hours to 3 hours. The exact length of the operation depends on complexity, primary versus revision rhinoplasty and use of autologous ( one’s own ) cartilage. The procedure is typically performed under anesthesia where you will be monitored and kept asleep by a dedicated anesthesia provider. You will have no pain or recollection of your rhinoplasty procedure and you will be totally asleep. Dr. Garcia typically performs a “closed” approach on uncomplicated, primary rhinoplasty but every patient is consented for the possibility of the “open” approach which uses an incision along the bottom of the nose. Both surgical approaches equally yield excellent cosmetic and functional results.

How long will rhinoplasty recovery take?

The immediate average recovery period after rhinoplasty is typically 7 to 10 days, but it always depends on the individual. Some rhinoplasties are purely cosmetic, which have a slightly different recovery process compared to rhinoplasties that are accompanied by reconstructive corrections to enhance breathing and nasal function. During this immediate recovery period, the first few days will be focused on resting and recovering. This is when symptoms such as swelling and bruising will be most severe, so following post-procedure guidelines will be essential. Towards the end of your first week of recovery, you should feel well enough to start moving around and easing back into a light routine. Most patients return to work within 2 weeks of their surgery. After 1-2 months, most visible swelling and side effects should have healed, with patients returning completely to their normal routine. However, keep in mind that it can take up to a year for the full results of your rhinoplasty to become visible.

Frequently Asked Rhinoplasty Surgical Questions

  • Is rhinoplasty a painful surgery?

No. With the techniques used by Dr. Garcia, patients will not have pain either during or after the procedure. We do not pack the nose after surgery so there is no postoperative pain. There will be nasal congestion after the operation for a few days.

  • Can you breathe after a nose job?

It is common to experience congestion in the nose following a nose job, particularly for patients who undergo reconstructive rhinoplasty surgery. This means that breathing through the nose might be slightly uncomfortable or difficult in the first few weeks following your surgery. You can expect to breathe normally within 2-3 weeks of surgery. Importantly, we advise patients to avoid blowing their nose during this time to avoid interfering with the healing process.

  • Can I walk after rhinoplasty?

During the day of your surgery, immediately after your procedure, you should rest as much as possible. This means no walking on the first day. Patients can begin very brief periods of light walking the day after surgery, permitting that they feel well enough to get out of bed. However, once patients are capable of light walking, it is actually encouraged to get up and take brief walks. Light walking can help facilitate the healing process by preventing blood clots and enhancing blood circulation.

  • Do you sleep during a nose job?

Yes. You will be completely unconscious for your nose job and will be completely pain free. You will have no recollection of anything between laying down in the operating room and the drive home.
