Mentoplasty utilizes chin implants made from a Silastic or Mirselene mesh to supplement the jawbone under the patient’s teeth. Chin augmentation is an outpatient procedure performed at the surgeon’s facility. If you are on any medications you should inform the performing surgeon beforehand. Typically, a surgery can last from thirty minutes to an hour and may be done under anesthesia. The surgeon creates an incision either underneath the chin or inside the mouth between the gum and the lower lip. After the incision is made the surgeon checks the chin to make sure the implant is of proper size, then sutures the chin implant, and completes the procedure. Recommended recovery should be about a week for people before they return to their normal lives. Since swelling and bruising can be expected, talking and smiling may be difficult for recovering patients. After recovery patients report more prominent chins that help the face gain symmetry.
