If you are seeking to improve your facial profile, chin implants may be used to enhance facial appearance by adding definition and contour at the jaw line and restoring the balance between the chin and other facial features. With five convenient locations serving Jacksonville, Ponte Vedra and St. Augustine, Garcia Facial Plastic Surgery, led by double board-certified facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon Dr. Phillip Garcia, offers chin implants for men and women who live in North Florida.
What is Chin Augmentation?
Chin augmentation, known medically as mentoplasty, is a plastic surgery procedure designed to add volume and definition to a receding chin or otherwise reshape the jaw line.
When the lower third of the face or the area between the bottom of the nose and the lower part of the chin is either too short vertically or receded on the profile, a chin implant improves not only the vertical height of the chin but the projection of the chin. Chin implant surgery uses man-made materials to augment the middle and lower thirds of the face. Ideally, the face should be divided into equally proportioned thirds in the upper, middle and lower parts. Each of these parts should have proportional prominence and symmetry.

Chin Augmentation Patient Testimonial
“The office staff at Garcia Facial Plastic Surgery, as well as the medical staff, is the most patient, friendly and professional people I have ever encountered in any medical office I have ever visited. I was particularly impressed with Brenda and her willingness to share her experience with the same type of surgery and her frank assessment of what I might expect. The spiritual atmosphere at the clinic made me, a Christian, most comfortable.” — N.W.
Benefits of Chin Augmentation
Chin augmentation significantly enhances the appearance and balance of the overall facial features. For example, a weak or receding chin may make a large nose appear even larger, and increasing the size and definition of the chin may help to offset the nose. In many cases, chin augmentation may be combined with rhinoplasty.
What Materials Do You Use For Chin Implant Surgery?
Chin implants are custom made by us for each patient and are made of either Silastic or Mersilene® mesh. These are medical-grade materials that has been safely used by surgeons for many years. The benefit of the mesh is that it is highly customizable, and it integrates into the soft tissues, eventually feeling like your own tissues.
What Happens During a Chin Augmentation?
Board-certified Jacksonville plastic surgeon Dr. Phillip Garcia analyzes your face and proposes solutions that create or restore prominence to the chin area.
Chin augmentation surgery involves the insertion of an implant into the chin area to add volume and enhance the overall appearance of the jaw, restoring facial balance and harmony.
The surgery typically takes about 30 minutes to one hour to perform with local/twilight anesthesia. The surgery requires a very small incision on the inside of the mouth along the lower lip line. Our Jacksonville cosmetic surgeon does not use external incisions for your implant surgeries. Dr. Garcia will insert an implant of the appropriate size and shape after creating a “pocket” above the jawline. The incision is then sutured, and the chin may be bandaged or taped. Absorbable sutures are always used inside your mouth with implant surgery.
Is Chin Augmentation Right For Me?
Chin augmentation may be ideal for you if you have a weak or receding chin and want to add volume and definition to the chin or jaw area. Anyone considering chin augmentation should maintain realistic expectations regarding the outcomes that are possible, and all candidates must be in good health.
Where Will I Stay After Chin Implant Surgery?
Once your chin implant surgery is completed, you will be taken to one of our recovery cottages, where you will have a certified caregiver stay with you all night. The caregiver will help feed you and help you get around, among other things. One of your family members is welcome to stay at the recovery cottage.
Is There Pain After Chin Implant Surgery?
No. Chin implant surgery is not painful. At worst, you may feel a very small amount of tightness and swelling for a few days after the procedure, but this will subside as your swelling goes down. Occasionally, patients feel temporary numbness in the operated areas, but this improves in a matter of weeks.
Chin Augmentation Recovery
Some minor swelling and bruising are to be expected following surgery. Facial movements, such as smiling and talking, may be difficult for a few days due to temporary swelling, and some dietary restrictions may be recommended in cases where incisions are made on the inside of the mouth. Patients may also experience some minor discomfort during the first few days of recovery, and Dr. Garcia may prescribe pain medication, if necessary. We recommend that you wait one week following chin augmentation surgery before returning to work. Other regular activities may be resumed gradually, and you should wait about six weeks before resuming more strenuous activities that may risk bumps or injury to the face.
Will I Look Unnatural After Chin Implant Surgery?
The goal of chin implant surgery is to create prominence to the chin area in a natural fashion that falls inside the proportions of your face. Remember, the goal, as with all of our operations, is to make you look natural and well proportioned. Jacksonville cosmetic surgeon Dr. Phillip Garcia specializes in chin implant surgery and will only recommend implants that allow you to look natural.
