What Materials Do You Use For Chin Implant Surgery?
Chin implants are custom made by us for each patient and are made of either Silastic or Mersilene® mesh. These are medical-grade materials that has been safely used by surgeons for many years. The benefit of the mesh is that it is highly customizable, and it integrates into the soft tissues, eventually feeling like your own tissues.
What Happens During a Chin Augmentation?

Chin augmentation surgery involves the insertion of an implant into the chin area to add volume and enhance the overall appearance of the jaw, restoring facial balance and harmony.
The surgery typically takes about 30 minutes to one hour to perform with local/twilight anesthesia. The surgery requires a very small incision on the inside of the mouth along the lower lip line. Our Jacksonville cosmetic surgeon does not use external incisions for your implant surgeries. Dr. Garcia will insert an implant of the appropriate size and shape after creating a “pocket” above the jawline. The incision is then sutured, and the chin may be bandaged or taped. Absorbable sutures are always used inside your mouth with implant surgery.

Where Will I Stay After Chin Implant Surgery?
Once your chin implant surgery is completed, you will be taken to one of our recovery cottages, where you will have a certified caregiver stay with you all night. The caregiver will help feed you and help you get around, among other things. One of your family members is welcome to stay at the recovery cottage.
Is There Pain After Chin Implant Surgery?
No. Chin implant surgery is not painful. At worst, you may feel a very small amount of tightness and swelling for a few days after the procedure, but this will subside as your swelling goes down. Occasionally, patients feel temporary numbness in the operated areas, but this improves in a matter of weeks.
What is Recovery from Chin Augmentation Like?
Some minor swelling and bruising are to be expected following surgery. Facial movements, such as smiling and talking, may be difficult for a few days due to temporary swelling, and some dietary restrictions may be recommended in cases where incisions are made on the inside of the mouth. Patients may also experience some minor discomfort during the first few days of recovery, and Dr. Garcia may prescribe pain medication, if necessary. We recommend that you wait one week following chin augmentation surgery before returning to work. Other regular activities may be resumed gradually, and you should wait about six weeks before resuming more strenuous activities that may risk bumps or injury to the face.
