How Long Will Otoplasty Surgery Take?

Although the surgery duration may vary from patient to patient, otoplasty typically takes about two to three hours to complete. Typically, this surgery is usually performed under local or twilight anesthesia for adults, and general anesthesia for children. Regardless of your age, these anesthetic techniques ensure that you remain comfortable and pain-free throughout the surgery.

How Long Will Otoplasty Recovery Take?

After undergoing otoplasty, patients are required to wear a headband to keep their ears in the correct position for three weeks, 24 hours a day. Following this initial period, patients only need to wear the headband at night for an additional three weeks. Usually, there is no significant pain after the procedure, and drains are not necessary. The absorbable sutures used during the surgery will be removed around two weeks after the procedure. Patients can usually return to their regular daily routine, including work or school, within five to seven days. However, they should avoid contact sports and other activities that could cause injury to the ears for about two months. Athletic activities can resume about two weeks after the otoplasty, but patients should exercise caution during this time.

Frequently Asked Ear Surgery Questions

    • Is otoplasty a painful surgery?

No, with the anesthetic techniques used at Garcia Facial Plastic Surgery, ear surgery involves no pain or discomfort during the procedure. We use either local, general or twilight anesthesia depending on the patient’s age, all of which ensure that patients experience no pain whatsoever during surgery.

    • What are the risks of ear surgery?

Like any surgical procedure, otoplasty comes with certain risks and potential complications. These risks include bleeding, infection, and scarring, as well as complications that may arise during the healing process. It’s important to note, however, that these complications occur in fewer than 1% of ear surgery cases. Dr. Garcia’s extensive experience and expertise in otoplasty techniques also help to minimize the risks associated with this procedure. While there will always be some risks involved in any major surgery, with the guidance of a skilled and qualified surgeon, the likelihood of significant complications is greatly reduced.

    • How long do I have to wear a headband after otoplasty?

To ensure that the ears remain in the correct position after otoplasty, patients will be instructed to wear a headband for a period of three weeks, around the clock. After this initial period, they will only need to wear the headband while sleeping for an additional three weeks. Once this six-week period is complete, there is no need for any further headband usage.
