Is Eyelid Surgery Right for Me?

Blepharoplasty in Jacksonville, FLFor many of us, the eyes are one of the most important and treasured features of the body. During our youth, looking vibrant and well rested is relatively effortless. However, as you age, the eyes may not retain that young and energetic look you came to love. If the appearance of your eyes has become a concern, then you may be wondering if eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, is right for you. Here are a few things to keep in mind to help you make the most informed decision:

Eyelid Surgery Can Address Upper and Lower Eyelid Concerns

One of the best aspects of eyelid surgery is that it is designed to leave you looking younger and less exhausted by addressing the upper and lower parts of the eyes. Whether you have droopy upper eyelids or bags under the eyes (caused by fat deposits), blepharoplasty can help.

It’s An Easy Addition to Other Procedures

Given the simplicity and generally straightforward nature of blepharoplasty, it is an excellent addition to other procedures such as a brow lift, facelift or neck lift.

For surgery on the upper eyelid, Dr. J. Phillip Garcia will make an incision in the crease of the eyelid to remove excess skin and the small, fatty bulge in the corner of the eye. For surgery on the lower eyelid, an incision will be made under the eyelashes to remove the excess fat and skin there. Both surgeries are performed under twilight anesthesia and take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour to complete.

Expect a Week of Recovery

Eyelid surgery, while not especially complex, is one procedure that will require at least a week of downtime. In the days following your procedure, you can expect to see some swelling and bruising, which will take roughly two to four weeks to completely resolve. Post-surgery symptoms can include:

  • Mild pain
  • Dryness, itchiness or burning in the eyes
  • Tearing
  • Light sensitivity
  • Blurred or double vision

Fortunately, these symptoms will begin to resolve themselves within a few days, and stitches are removed on the seventh day after your procedure. We recommend that our patients allow themselves anywhere from seven to 10 days post-operation before returning to work.
