Jacksonville Residents Want to Know: Can I combine Surgical and Spa Procedures?

Medical Spa Services in Jacksonville, FLWhen undergoing treatment to look younger, we want to make sure we get the best possible results. With so many options on the market, it’s hard to not get carried away with a list of procedures you want to receive, and that’s okay. Combining procedures is actually advantageous to getting you your ultimate look.

Combination Therapy

Have you ever asked your doctor if it would be okay to get multiple procedures done at the same time? There’s actually a word for putting multiple procedures together. Combination Therapy is when you combine two or more procedures together to get your desired results. You’re not crazy for wanting to achieve your ultimate look, and it’s actually encouraged that you combine certain procedures to do so. This is because you can use multiple treatments to treat different layers of the skin, resulting in a fresh face.

Chemical Peels

Chemical Peels are a wonderful way to refresh the skin with gentle or aggressive skin resurfacing. Skin resurfacing means re-contouring and taking off the outer and inner layers of the skin to reveal a fresh layer of skin underneath. Chemical peels exfoliate the face and get rid of your dull and dead skin, resulting in a bright, fresh face. When used in combination with your other procedures, you can ensure your skin is smoother and the results of your procedure last longer. The chemical peel acts as a maintenance step to your other procedure.

Microneedling

Similar to chemical peels, microneedling resurfaces the skin. In this minimally invasive med spa treatment, tiny needles create micro-channels in the skin, which naturally stimulates the production of collagen and elastin in the treated area. Collagen and elastin are the properties in the face that add volume and smooth the skin. Microneedling works well in combination with dermal fillers to add volume back into the face and maintain your plump and youthful skin between treatments. At Garcia Facial Plastic Surgery, we often pair microneedling with chemical peels. We call this “Pens and Peels,” referring to the SkinPen we use for microneedling.

Ultherapy®

Ultherapy® involves using ultrasound technology to emit energy into the deeper layers of our skin. While microneedling and chemical peels work in combination with your fillers to resurface the skin, Ultherapy® works well in combination with more invasive procedures to target the deeper layers of the skin and promote the production of collagen. This therapy is non-invasive and requires no downtime. When used in combination with procedures like a facelift or less invasive procedures like a chemical peel, you can expect a tighter, more firm appearance to the face.

Jacksonville Residents Ask: Fillers or Botox®?

Botox® in Jacksonville, FL

Americans are heading to the dermatologist and plastic surgeons more than ever for non-invasive cosmetic procedures. As of last year, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons reported a 200 percent increase in non-invasive cosmetic procedures since 2000. In 2015, ASPS reported that Botox® and dermal fillers accounted for 9 million procedures. So, what’s the hype all about? Let’s take a look at what each of these options are, what they can be used for and who is a good candidate for each.

Botox® in Jacksonville, FL

What’s Botox® and How Is It Used?

Botox® is a safe injectable substance that has been FDA approved and widely available for decades. “Botox” is a brand name for Botulinum toxin. It’s derived from bacteria and when injected by licensed, skilled professionals like the Garcia Facial Plastic Surgery team, it prevents the underlying muscle from contracting and causing wrinkles or fine lines. When applied to existing wrinkles, the effect is a smoothing of the skin. Botox® works best for dynamic wrinkles caused by muscle contraction.

Due to the unique effects of Botox®, it also has alternative uses for the treatment of neck spasms, excessive sweat, overactive bladder, and lazy eye. In some patients, it also supports the reduction of chronic migraines. Learn about Botox® in greater detail and see examples of its results.

What are Dermal Fillers and How Are They Used?

“Dermal fillers”, also known as “soft tissue fillers”, are used to describe a variety of injectable serums that add volume to the areas treated, reducing the visible signs of aging. All fillers add volume to the treated area, but they work in different ways and leverage different chemical formulas to achieve results. Common types of fillers are calcium hydroxylapatite, hyaluronic acid, polyalkylimide, polylactic acid, and polymethyl-methacrylate microspheres (PMMA).  Each type of filler works in a different way to create volume under the skin and restore smoothness, fullness and a youthful look.

Fillers can be used to plump lips, enhance shallow areas of the face, decrease shadows and wrinkles under the eyes, and fill or soften static wrinkles caused by excess or sagging skin. To learn more about fillers and see the results that can be achieved, watch our video.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Botox® and Fillers?

While both options are FDA approved, safe and appropriate for most individuals, the best candidates are in good health with no known allergies to the specific injectable used. Deciding which option is right for you, will depend on the specific results you wish to achieve. To find out if you’re a candidate, it is always best to speak to a board-certified surgeon.

Deciding Which Treatment is Right for You

The best way to decide which procedure is most appropriate for you is to consult a physician. Double board-certified surgeons like Dr. Phillip Garcia will be able to make the best recommendation to help you achieve the exact look you have in mind. To schedule your consultation, contact us today.

Jackonsville Residents Ask: Does Plastic Surgery Make me Vain?

Plastic Surgery in Jacksonville, FL

You’ve heard it before and, unfortunately, you’ll probably hear it again, “cosmetic surgery is so vain”. We want to break down this idea a little further and assure you the vanity stigma that sometimes surrounds cosmetic surgery is as just as ridiculous as it seems. Dr. Garcia and his team have heard the questions, “does this make me vain?” and “am I selfish for wanting this?” a number of times. It’s important for anyone considering plastic surgery to know that the answer is simple – it’s “No.”

Plastic Surgery in Jacksonville, FL

Let’s start at the very beginning, with the word “vain”. Technically speaking, vanity is defined as, “excessive pride in or admiration of one’s own appearance or achievements” according to the Oxford Dictionary. We don’t see cosmetic surgery anywhere in the definition and would like to call attention to the words that are included, “excessive pride”. There are many reasons patients choose to undergo cosmetic procedures, and we’d like to inform you that excessive pride isn’t usually one of them. Instead, many patients come in to fix a deformity or achieve a result that will help overcome an area of insecurity or lack of confidence.

Confidence and quality of life varies wildly for each individual. Some people seem to effortlessly roll through life while others struggle daily. Whether you’re a man or woman, your reasons for wanting a particular surgery or med spa procedure to achieve a certain look, fix a deformity, or gain the confidence you’ve been missing are not vain. Cosmetic procedures are proven to provide patients with benefits far beyond the physical transformation. Emotional and psychological improvements are commonly reported, resulting in a higher sense of confidence for patients. Enhancing your confidence tends to result in better socialization habits, which can ultimately lead to an increased quality of life. The improved quality of life isn’t just social, as many patients report they become more physically active and healthier post-procedure. Last we checked, improving your quality of life and working on your confidence is brave!

Ultimately, it is your body and your life, so it’s important to understand that whatever your reason, it’s YOURS. Plastic surgery and cosmetic procedures should never be about anyone else or what others think of your body. Choosing to undergo a procedure should always be about YOU, what you want, and what will make you love the way you look. For some people, loving the way you look can be achieved in a gym or through simple topical measures, but for others, it requires cosmetic procedures. Everyone deserves to love the body they have. You owe no one an explanation for your decision to get a cosmetic procedure, nor should you ever feel like you have to hide that you have gotten one. We only get one shot at living our lives to the fullest. Don’t ever apologize for wanting or having a cosmetic procedure.

Dr. Phillip Garcia and the entire team of experts at the Garcia Facial Plastic Surgery are here to help answer all of your questions and guide you through every step of the process. We’re dedicated to ensuring the best experience for each and every patient. Schedule your consultation today!

Lift or Lipo? Redefining Your Neck in Jacksonville

Facial Liposuction in Jacksonville, FL

When it comes to changing the appearance of your neck, there are a variety of options patients can choose between. Two of the most common procedures that patients consider are neck lifts and neck liposuction, but what is the difference? Why should you choose one over the other?

Similarities

First, it is important to understand the similarities between these two procedures. Both Neck Lifts and Neck Liposuction:

  • Can be used to recontour the shape of the neck
  • Are surgical procedures lasting between 30 minutes and 2 hours
  • Require some form of anesthesia to complete
  • Have some post-procedure recovery side effects

While the two procedures can produce great results for patients, it is also important to understand the distinct differences between the two in order to decide which is best to achieve desired results.

Facial Liposuction in Jacksonville, FL

About Neck Liposuction

Liposuction, or lipoplasty, is a useful procedure that immediately improves certain aesthetic conditions of the neck:

  • Double Chin
  • Excess Fat

The reduction of the chin and neck area is accomplished by removing fat cells permanently with a small tube (cannula) and suction. Local anesthesia is applied to the treatment area, and a small incision is made underneath the chin. The cannula and suction devices are then inserted and used to remove fat to recontour the shape of the chin and neck. The procedure takes anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours depending on the size of the treatment area.

Bruising and swelling may occur following the completion of the procedure. A head-wrap may be required to apply pressure under the chin so that swelling is minimized and ensure the new contoured shape will heal properly. To expedite healing, patients may need to maintain an upright position the days immediately following surgery. Overall, patients should anticipate being able to return to work quickly but allow one week for healing and up to 6 weeks until strenuous activity can be resumed. Dr. Garcia and the team will monitor the healing progress closely.

About Neck Lift Surgery

A neck lift is also known as a platysmaplasty, and can be used to minimize some of the following issues:

  • Excess fat in the neck or lower face
  • Excess or sagging skin
  • Neck folds
  • Neck bands
  • Turkey wattle effect

It is a safe and relatively simple procedure that can be performed on an outpatient basis. Generally, either twilight or local anesthesia is used. Depending on the specific needs of the patient, incisions will be made behind the ears, and/or under the chin. To achieve desired results, neck muscles must be tightened and realigned while excess skin and fat is removed so the remaining can be lifted into place.

During the procedure, the underlying neck muscles are tightened and realigned, excess skin and fat are trimmed away, and the remaining skin is lifted. Incisions are then sutured. A dressing will be applied over top.

Immediately following the procedure, mild swelling and bruising may occur. Prescription pain medications may be given to ease discomfort and any dressing applied will typically be ready for removal within the next day. The sutures are absorbable, and it will take approximately one week for most patients to be able to resume normal activity.

What Is “Preventative Botox®”?

The phrase “Preventative Botox®” has come up a lot in pop culture over the past few years and what it describes is injections of Botulinum toxin applied proactively to prevent the appearance of wrinkles, rather than to correct existing wrinkles on the skin’s surface.

Micro Botox® is also popular with the younger adults. Micro Botox® is small amounts of Botox® distributed over a large surface area. This is used for pore size, sweat prevention and to lessen fine lines and wrinkles. It give a more natural, less “frozen” look.

Botox® in Jacksonville, FL

How Does Preventative Botox® Work?

Preventative Botox® uses the same exact process and formula as other Botox® injections. A fine needle is used to inject the formula into the skin on the desired areas. The formula then keeps the underlying muscle from contracting, causing the skin to relax and appear smooth.

The reason it’s called “preventative” is because the Botox® is treating an area where wrinkles have not yet formed fully in order to delay or prohibit future appearance. Generally, this is done in a patient’s 20s and 30s, but could be done at any age.

Why should I consider Botox® in my 20s and 30s?

Botox® is safe and FDA Approved for people who are 18 years of age and older. People in their twenties and thirties are often good candidates for “preventative Botox®” if they have expression lines that they wish to smooth out.

Preventative Botox® is best for individuals in their mid-twenties to thirties that are looking for a non-surgical method to enhance the overall appearance of their skin, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, and help delay the onset of future signs of aging.

Does it really work?

Botox® is proven to help with the prevention of dynamic wrinkles and can delay the onset for younger individuals when applied by a skilled, licensed professionals, such as Becky Hamilton at the Garcia Facial Plastic Surgery. Reality vs. Myths in Facial Plastic Surgery in Jacksonville, FL

Garcia Facial Plastic Surgery

Cosmetic surgery is becoming more and more common in today’s society, and advances in medical technology are making it easier than ever to step in and counteract the effects of aging. From minimally invasive procedures like dermal fillers and injectables to surgical options such as a facelift or blepharoplasty, there are myriad options to choose from if you are looking to improve your appearance.

Due to the prevalence of cosmetic procedures, numerous myths regarding them have surfaced. Below are some of the most common misconceptions.

Cosmetic Surgery and Plastic Surgery are the Same

While often used interchangeably, these two terms refer to two separate types of procedures. Cosmetic surgery applies to elective procedures that are entirely aesthetic in nature. Plastic surgery, on the other hand, includes procedures that are medically necessary, such as reconstruction as the result of genetic defects or accidents.

Women are the Main Candidates for Cosmetic Procedures

Contrary to popular belief, women are not the only ones who choose to undergo elective cosmetic procedures. Now, more than ever, men are taking action to correct any issues they are having. Some of the most popular procedures for men include Botox®, hair restoration, microdermabrasion, and liposuction.

Botox® will Inhibit Facial Expressions

One of the main misconceptions about Botox® is that it will freeze your facial muscles, causing an unnatural and expressionless look. If administered correctly, Botox® targets specific muscle groups that are known to overact and engage in repetitive motions that lead to deep lines and wrinkles. It will not restrict movement in large areas of the face.

Cosmetic Surgery is only for the Rich and Famous

Cosmetic surgery providers and medical spas are thriving, which would not be the case if we were only serving the super wealthy. The majority of aesthetic patients are normal, everyday people who are simply seeking to restore confidence and improve their daily lives. If affordability is a concern for you, be sure to ask your doctor about financing options for your procedure.

Jacksonville Residents Ask: Are Plastic Surgery Consultations?

Plastic Surgery in Jacksonville, FL

One of the most important steps on the journey to an improved you is the consultation. This is your opportunity to get all the information you need to make an informed decision regarding treatment.

Why is a Consultation Important?

A consultation answers two very important questions:

  • Is this the right surgeon for me?
  • Is this the right procedure for me?

During a consultation, you will get a feel for the office and your doctor. It is of the utmost importance that you feel comfortable with the people who will be providing you with care and the facility where that care will take place. Furthermore, the consultation is a time where you will be able to share your concerns with your doctor, while also informing them of the specifics of your case.

Once Dr. Garcia has all the pertinent information, the two of you can work together to come up with a treatment plan that best suits your needs, budget, and while also taking your individual health into consideration.

The consultation is also important for you to receive a proper analysis of what would work for you. Because everyone has a different skin type and lifestyle, we need to see patients first-hand to suggest any kind of procedure. Our thorough analysis gives us the opportunity to see if the initial procedure of interest would work or if we need to go with other options to address the same concerns.

What Should I Expect?

Photos and 3D imaging are taken of every patient to keep in their medical file. In most cases, it is wise to set aside 1 hour for the appointment. This time frame will allow you to express your concerns, ask your questions, and discuss all the options with Dr. Garcia. It helps when the medical history is completed online before the appointment. This is emailed to the patient upon scheduling the consultation.

Once you have narrowed down your options and zeroed in on a procedure, the doctor can also give you a rundown of what to expect before, during, and after your surgery or non-surgical procedure. The consultation is also the time to talk about payment and financing options.

What is the Cost?

Due to the importance of the consultation, getting to know your doctor, and understanding the scope of your surgery. However, we do ask to keep a credit card number on file as we charge a no-show fee if the patient does not show for their appointment without prior notification. If you are thinking of undergoing a cosmetic procedure, come in for a consultation and learn more.

To find out which procedure is right for you, contact us for more information or to schedule a consultation. Garcia Facial Plastic Surgery serves the greater Jacksonville, Florida area.
