Can a Rhinoplasty Help You Breathe Better?

When most people think of nose surgery, they assume that it has only cosmetic benefits. However, that is simply not the case. The truth is that a rhinoplasty, also known as nose surgery, can in fact help improve breathing. This means that, in addition to improving your appearance, a rhinoplasty could have health benefits.

What Is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty in Jacksonville, FLRhinoplasty is a frequently desired surgery that can be used to alter the appearance and function of your nose. Cosmetically, nose jobs are often desired for their ability to increase or decrease nose size, remove an unwanted hump, change the width of the nostrils, or alter the angle between the nose and upper lip. At Garcia Facial Plastic Surgery, we always address both appearance and function during the same procedure.

Functionally speaking, many patients suffer from a deviated septum. When this occurs, breathing through the nose can be more difficult. As a result, surgery to fix a deviated septum can create a less obstructed nasal passage, so that patients experience an easier time with day-to-day breath.

What Happens During The Surgery?

At Garcia Facial Plastic Surgery, patients sleep through the entire procedure thanks to “twilight” anesthesia. All incisions are done on the inside of the nose, and we do not use nasal packing after surgery. Afterward, most patients report feeling mild fullness or tightness due to swelling, but little to no pain.

How Long Will It Take To Recover?

Typically, our patients report being able to breathe out of their nose again two to three days after surgery. To ensure the best results, we require patients to refrain from strenuous activities for two weeks and lifting heavy objects for three weeks. As an added precaution, we recommend that patients avoid any activities that could cause trauma to the nose for six weeks post operation. We follow all patients’ recovery for one year, as it may take that length of time to fully appreciate the final results.
