Under the direction of double board-certified facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon Dr. Phillip Garcia, Garcia Facial Plastic Surgery is proud to offer rhinoplasty for patients in and around Fleming Island, FL. Our patients desire rhinoplasty for a number of reasons, including to enhance facial balance, correct a deviated septum and enhance breathing. Many people are self-conscious about a bump on their nose, uneven nostrils, or an unusual sized or shaped nose, and desire rhinoplasty to improve their self-confidence.
What Is Rhinoplasty?
Often referred to as a “nose job”, rhinoplasty is an extremely popular plastic surgery procedure among our Fleming Island patients. It can be performed to change the overall size of the nose, remove an unsightly hump, make alterations to the tip or bridge, change the width of the nostrils, or to modify the angle between the nose and upper lip. Many of these enhancements will also result in a more aesthetically pleasing balance between a person’s facial features.
Rhinoplasty may be either cosmetic or functional in nature.
- Cosmetic nasal surgery deals specifically with the appearance of the nose.
- Functional nasal surgery addresses efficient breathing through the nose.
Here at Garcia Facial Plastic Surgery, we always address the aesthetics and functionality of the nose at the same time.
Rhinoplasty Candidates
Cosmetic rhinoplasty involves reshaping the nose to alter its appearance or eliminate deformities. Each procedure is highly customized based on the size and shape of your nose, your cosmetic goals, and other factors. Cosmetic rhinoplasty is generally not recommended for teens, as further growth and development could once again alter the configurations of the nose. Youth are advised to wait until around age 17 for girls or age 18 for boys to ensure permanent results.
Functional nasal surgery can correct deformities of the nose due to birth defects or trauma. In many cases, this has an added benefit of restoring normal breathing. Many of the same techniques used during cosmetic procedures can be utilized to correct damage due to injury or birth defects.
In some cases, nasal surgery may be performed to correct breathing. This may involve simply straightening the septum, or the wall of cartilage inside the nose that separates the two nostrils and their airways, or it may require building up the structure and support of the nose to improve airflow. Health insurance often covers functional nasal surgery when it is medically necessary.
