Since both brown spots and wrinkles are found in the dermis layer of skin, both are treated in a similar manner.

Fine lines and wrinkles are found within the dermis. Temporary treatments such as dermal fillers basically flatten or push each line and wrinkle from below. Procedures that are longer-lasting such as deep chemical peels, laser resurfacing, and dermabrasion, excise the outer part of the dermis, leading to a reduction in wrinkle depth. It may be helpful to think of fine lines and wrinkles as scratches on a table; the only removal method involves sanding the area and applying varnish to the table.

Keep in mind that the procedures described involve a recommended one week recovery period and take place under twilight anesthesia in an operating room.

Brown spots are found inside the dermis, but in the uppermost layers, so the techniques to treat them are less aggressive than treatments for wrinkles. The Obagi™ system is performed daily and involves no downtime. Intense pulsed light (IPL®) and medium depth peels are also used to remove brown spots but involve a one week recovery period.
