Reconstructive Facial Surgery
About Reconstructive Facial Surgery
The face is one of the most commonly injured parts of the body. Whether the cause of the injury is a dog bite, an automobile accident or skin cancer, the facial reconstructive surgeon usually has significant challenges to surmount. It is important to remember the reasons why facial reconstruction is performed.
The first is function. When one of the facial bones such as the jaw, eye socket or cheek bones are injured, there may be some interference with the function of the mouth, eye, etc.

Other times, when there is facial scarring that is severe enough, the motion of the face may be compromised.
The second reason facial reconstruction is performed is form. That is, appearance. On most occasions, there is a significant cosmetic deformity with any kind of skin cancer surgery, facial bone fracture or soft tissue injury. The solutions to these problems vary widely but the goal is improvement in the appearance.
We must emphasize that the goal with reconstructive surgery is improvement and not complete and perfect restoration of either function or appearance.

The Facial Reconstructive Operation
The great majority of reconstructive operations involving the skin are performed under local anesthesia at our facility. Whether the cause of the problem is Mohs Surgery in Jacksonville or whether the cause is a dog bite in Jacksonville, the solution is usually available without the use of sedation or general anesthesia.
On some occasions such as in the cases of large facial traumas, traumas in children or facial fractures, general or sedation anesthesia must be administered to properly resolve the problem. If this is the case, the procedure can be performed in our JCAHO accredited Jacksonville surgical suite, the outpatient surgery center or the hospital.
