About Facelift Surgery
Is facelift surgery right for you? Facelift (or Rhytidectomy) surgery is meant to address the signs of facial aging particularly in the lower cheek and neck. These signs of aging include the jowls in the lower cheek and the excess skin of the neck. If these signs of aging are concerns when one looks in the mirror, the solution is the facelift.
Facial Aging
As the face ages, jowls, which is latin for "broken jawline", begin to develop as a result of the cheek losing its strength with the deeper underlying musculature. As the muscle sags, it takes the more superficial fat and skin with it creating the appearance of a "jowl" along the jawline.
The neck ages in a different manner when the superficial muscle of the neck, called the platysma falls in a downward direction and splays apart in the middle under the chin. This "shifting" of the muscle takes the more superficial fat and skin with it and causes the appearance of aging.

The Facelift Operation
The facelift operation is usually performed under "twilight" anesthesia without the use of breathing tubes or general anesthetic.
The incisions for facelift surgery are concealed and allow the facelift surgeon to reposition the muscles that have fallen back to their natural, youthful positions.
Remember, there are no short cuts to facelift surgery. In order to achieve a natural, "well-rested" appearance after a facelift, the muscles of the face and neck must be repositioned and allowed to heal in their new position. This can only be performed with procedures that require actual plastic surgery performed by a board certified plastic surgeons who are facelift specialists.
While there are some plastic surgeons in Florida and some plastic surgeons involved in Jacksonville plastic surgery that advocate endoscopic facelift surgery or thread lift surgery, we have not found this to be an effective or long-lasting facelift treatment.

The recovery period from a long-lasting facelift is approximately one week to two weeks. The great majority of swelling after facelift and bruising after facelift is resolved 2 weeks after the operation with many patients returning to work at 7 to 10 days after the facelift.
