Eyelid Surgery/Blepharoplasty

About Eyelid Surgery/About Blepharoplasty

Is eyelid surgery right for you?

Blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery is the procedure that removes the excess skin and the bulges from around the eyes.

The eyes are the first features we notice when looking at someone. Because of this, they are usually the first place where the signs of facial aging are noticed.

There are mainly two issues that lead to the aged or tired appearance in the eyes.

First is excess skin that causes the loss of the crease in the upper eyelid and can drape over the eyelashes if it is severe. Excess skin in the lower eyelids can lead to a "crêpe" or wrinkled appearance to the lower eyelid.

The second issue that leads to the signs of aging in the eyes is the bags around the eyes. Generally, these are due to fatty pockets falling forward through an aged or weakened wall called the septum. As this "fat hernia" shifts forward it is seen as bags around the eyes that create a tired appearance to the face.

The Eyelid Operation

Eyelid surgery is usually performed in combination with other procedures such as facelift, neck lift, or browlift.

When performed alone, the eyelid operation takes one and a half to two hours if both upper and lower eyelids are addressed.

The upper eyelid operation is performed through an incision in the crease of the upper eyelid. The upper eyelid blepharoplasty removes the excess upper eyelid skin and removes the small fatty bulge in the inner corner of the eye. A fine suture is used under the skin to close the incision.

The lower eyelid operation addresses the excess fat and skin through a very small incision underneath the eyelashes located in the first crease. Sometimes, if only the fatty pockets need be addressed, a small incision can be placed behind the eyelid making the incisions invisible.

The eyelid operation is performed under local twilight anesthesia.
Otoplasty Surgery Recovery

After otoplasty surgery, patients wear a headband that keeps the ears in place, 24 hrs per day for three weeks. After the initial three weeks, patients only need to wear the headband at night for another three weeks.

Patients can resume normal athletic activity at two weeks after otoplasty surgery.

There is usually no pain after otoplasty surgery and we do not use drains after the operation. The absorbable sutures are usually gone at about two weeks after surgery.
